CHINA
Below is a copy of a letter which is self-explanatory:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to request your help on this urgent issue. A Europe based company, Eutelsat, is now siding with the Chinese Communist Party and has shut down New Tang Dynasty TV (NTDTV)'s uncensored broadcast to China since June 16, 2008.
My name is Bin Wang. From my personal experience, I know how urgently the Chinese people need access to uncensored information, and how high a price they are paying for it. I was secretly sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment in China simply because I practice Falun Gong (a self-improvement system that teaches the principle of "Truth, Compassion, Tolerance" and has fives sets of meditation exercises). I was also punished for introducing some friends to work for the Epoch Times, an American media company that seeks to report the true news in China, which inevitably involves exposure of the crimes committed by the Chinese Communist Party. In prison, I faced intimidation, corporal punishment and forced labour. During these years of persecution, some of my friends died, some were tortured to the point of mental collapse, and others are still in prison. I am fortunate to be able to escape abroad, but millions of my fellow countrymen are still living in terror.
NTDTV is the only Chinese-language television station outside the reach of Chinese communist censorship. For a number of years NTDTV has been a beacon of hope for the masses of Chinese people living under a complete information blockade. While we strive for a high human rights standard in Europe, it is shocking to see Eutelsat choosing to work with the Chinese Communist Party in suppressing freedom. Eutelsat's official explanation is that the electricity supply for its W5 satellite had problems. However, media freedom watchdog Reporters Without Boarders (RSF) has revealed evidence that the shut-down was ordered by Eutelsat's CEO Mr. Giuliano Berretta to please the Chinese communist regime, and was "a premeditated, politically-motivated decision violating the free flow of information and the convention under which Eutelsat operates."
This is not the first time Mr. Berretta tried to stop NTDTV. In 2005, he tried to cut off NTDTV to please the Chinese communist regime. Now just before the Beijing Olympics, Mr. Berretta has shut down NTDTV and slammed shut the only window of free information to millions of Chinese people. Once again he has put Eutelsat's credibility and business ethics at stake. It is shameful that Mr. Berretta is enjoying freedom in Europe while assisting the Chinese communist regime to deny freedom of information for millions of Chinese.
I sincerely hope all freedom loving people to write to your government representatives, Eutelsat board members and shareholders to ensure that Eutelsat live up to their mission commitments and restore NTDTV's broadcast to China as soon as possible. Your help can provide such moral support to the Chinese people, and I thank you for helping them to regain access to freedom of information.
